Alternative meanings, often sardonic and suggestive of social Darwinism and Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil, are attributed to words commonly found in a glossary of political words. They reflect on political discourses gaining strength in the public domain in the UK whilst looking back at 1960s Portuguese colonialist discourse. The Portuguese regime was then accused of "verbal luxury", of constructing a colonial representation different from reality. Similarly, these political concepts, predominantly integral to democratic life, are defined through socially divisive practices.
